Dr. Bonin Lewallen has been a NOAA LMRCSC mentor since 2017. She mentored three undergraduate and two graduate students fully funded by this comprehensive training program. Most graduate-level projects were conducted in partnership with NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center/ US Antarctic Marine Living Resources Program (Dr. Douglas Krause). These students have been highly successful in their programs and went on to pursue PhD degrees and positions at NOAA.
Internships for diversity and inclusion in marine mammal research
Funded by US Department of Defense, Office of Naval Research Marine Mammal Program
MAMMEL contributes to this ONR-funded program (Bonin Lewallen is a co-PI), initiated and led by Dr. Tara Cox at Savannah State University. Students are funded to assist marine mammal research projects and receive soft-skill training during the academic year. At the end of the academic year, they have the opportunity to join one of our seven partner organizations for a fully funded summer internship working with marine mammals. While completing the program, students can attend regional marine mammal conferences and receive continuous career development support.
